Dude, What A FARTKNOCKER!

So I was trying to think of a good word that was clean, old school, and less negative than others. I finally came up with Fartknocker. Ah, yes, Fartknocker.
A term widely used by many second graders and of course Beavis and Butthead. So let’s get into what I am using the term to describe.
We are at the peak of the ‘automation’, ‘instant gratification’, and ‘find someone who can do it for me’ way of society. That said, it’s going to become easier and easier to seem like a Fartknocker these days when it comes to knowledge and the effort to obtain it. Our society has become lackadaisical about their efforts to learn. We are bombarded with useful tools to expand our knowledge of topics, and still so many end up looking lazy. Plus, people come up with grandiose excuses as to why they can’t continue to learn about the things that affect their daily life.
It’s become clear to me, over the short life I’ve lived so far, that there is a part of traditional education that is useful. For the most part it’s the work ethic and lessons outside of what’s in the books that come in handy. The REAL learning is self taught. We hit the point where we realize we have to know FOR REAL how money, health, religion, etc. will affect our lives and how to work with them. This is when the Fartknockers go “oh crap, I don’t know which direction I should go” or “oh crap, I don’t know much about that because they didn’t teach that in school”. Ever notice how when people really like something they get deep into it and learn as much as they can. Most of the time these are just hobbies, but they want to be the best they can be around their friends and/or hobbyists. Then they roll through McD’s wondering how they can lose 30 pounds on their way to their Brokers office to ask “How’s my portfolio today Mr. Expert”?
So here’s the thing. I know I’m not the top notch know-it-all student either, but if it affects my life enough I at least try. Instead of just complaining about the Fartknockers, let’s work on not looking like one. No, 20 minutes on GOOGLE is not enough for you to learn what you deserve to learn about a topic. For god sakes become a student…for LIFE! Read books, attend seminars, and go to networking events. It’s time we start taking responsibility for our own lives and livelihoods. There’s too much good information and technology out nowadays for any excuses. You don’t like your situation?…then change it FARTKNOCKER!
In Joy,
